Mower is easy to service with many accessible components
The design of the Z900 Series makes many service components reachable and easily accessible from the ground.
- Large, open engine compartment at the rear of the machine provides convenient servicing and ensures the engine heat is directed away from the operator.
Onboard maintenance chart
All ZTrak™ Mowers come with an onboard maintenance chart that is conveniently located inside the right-hand console. The service interval chart gives necessary service intervals.
Diagnostics
The hour meter shows the number of hours the machine is run when the key switch is in the on position. It only counts the hours the engine is actually running. Machine diagnostics are the first step of a monitoring system to help operators quickly diagnose common downtime issues. A trouble code light is included on the hour meter.
Use of the hour meter and service interval chart helps determine when the machine will need service.

An optional altitude kit is required when operating at altitudes above 2000 ft (610 m). The operator’s manual with the propane conversion kit provides further details. Parts must be ordered separately through John Deere Parts.
Propane facts:
- Propane is flammable and commonly used as a fuel.
- The molecular formula of propane is C3H8, and it is in the family of liquefied petroleum gases (LP gases). The other LP gases include butane, propylene, butadiene, butylene, isobutylene, and mixtures thereof.
- Propane is commonly available and has proven to be a dependable, safe, economical, and clean-burning fuel. It can be used as household fuel, industrial fuel, and fuel for internal combustion engines. Propane has been used as a fuel since 1910.
- At atmospheric pressure, propane boils at -44°F (-42.2°C), meaning it typically exists as a vapor. However, when contained under pressure, such as in a propane cylinder, it can exist as a liquid.
- Propane is naturally odorless, but includes an additive odorant, usually mercaptan, which gives it a distinct odor.
- Vapor propane is heavier than air, meaning it will settle in low areas such as along the ground or in drains.
Advantages of John Deere propane conversion kits include:
- Reduced fuel costs, up to 30 percent depending on fuel prices
- Lower emissions
- Reduced fuel-system maintenance
- Maintains John Deere warranty

Available Mulch On Demand™ deck
The Mulch On Demand mower deck delivers unprecedented levels of productivity and versatility to commercial mower operation. With the ability to switch between side discharge and mulching operation with the flip of a lever as the operator mows, keeping most clippings out of landscaping features and where they are wanted is extremely easy.
Key features of the 7-Iron™ PRO Mulch On Demand mower deck:
- Deck can be converted from a wide-open side discharge mode to a fully chambered mulching mode with a single move of a lever.
- NOTE: Mulch On Demand decks are a balance between a side discharge deck and a side discharge deck with a mulching kit.
- Deck is stamped from 7-gauge, 0.179-in. (4.6-mm) steel to minimize the number of welds and provide a smooth underside, with fewer sharp corners, for reduced material buildup.
- Significantly fewer welds on the deck shell to wear or break- it is stamped from a single sheet of steel rather than multiple fabrications. Anti-skid step on the deck provides for easy machine mounting.

- The operator can select the ground speed and direction control simply by moving levers forward or reverse.
- Positive neutral lock position for levers provides added safety.
- Brake & Go operator-presence system returns levers to the neutral position when the brake pedal is actively engaged.
- Starting the machines is as easy as starting a car. It no longer matters if the control levers are extended out or pulled in, as long as the parking brake is engaged. Just turn the key and go.
- Wide-bend, large-diameter steering levers swing out easily for entry and exit from the operator platform.
Brake & Go starting system
The Brake & Go starting system is a John Deere exclusive. This feature makes the starting process on all ZTrak™ mowers easier, while also making it possible to remove two interlock switches from the machine.
The Brake & Go starting procedure helps a novice operator look and feel like a professional. To start the machine, the parking brake must be engaged. It does not matter whether the power take-off (PTO) switch is on or off, nor does it matter if the control levers are pulled in or in the out position.
As long as the parking brake is engaged, the machine will start. When the parking brake is applied, the control levers cannot be moved to the forward or reverse positions.Adjustable levers
The motion control levers have two height positions and can also be adjusted forward or rearward within the slotted holes. The levers should be adjusted so the operator can achieve a full range of control operation comfortably.
Tracking adjustment
The easy-to-turn (from-the-seat) tracking adjustment allows operators to keep their mowers straight and produce professional striping results.
Onboard storage and cup holder
Several storage areas are provided on the ZTrak machines. A convenient cup holder is also available.
Right-hand control panel
The controls are grouped together on the right console, providing one central location for key switch, throttle, PTO engagement, height-of-cut, diagnostics, and hour meter.
- Rocker-type PTO switch
- Height-of-cut knob with transport lock
- Key switch
- Hour meter
- Throttle
- Separate choke control
- Easy choke operation yields less fouling of plugs
- No choke required for the electronic fuel injection (EFI) models
Easy-to-operate height-of-cut adjustment enables on-the-go changes
An easy-to-use cutting-height lift system allows the operator to adjust the mower deck height with no tools and minimal effort. The easy-to-grip knob allows operators to dial in the desired height of cut (HOC).
Cutting height can be adjusted from approximately 1 in. to 5.5 in. (2.5 cm to 14 cm). Each increment on the knob adjusts the HOC approximately 0.25 in. (0.64 cm). The deck can also be raised and locked in a transport position to provide maximum ground clearance when moving the machine from one area to another.
The transport lock function allows the deck to be returned to the previous HOC after being in the transport position:- Use the foot-lift pedal to lift the deck and engage the transport lock.
- Rotate the knob to adjust from 1 in. to 5.5 in. (2.5 cm to 14 cm) in 0.25-in. (0.64 cm) increments.
This design increases productivity by allowing operators to change the cutting height without having to leave the seat.

Traditional JD
Our Z920M w60” 7-iron deck is great. With just over 2 acres to mow every 3 to 5 days, our Z920M has plenty of power, Is easy operating, has a great ride, gives a smooth cut, is easy starting, and has easy and fast fuel fill. The z-turn reminds me of earlier days on the “stick steer” hay swather in the hay field; you do some major cutting and spend less time turning. The fuel consumption is great, making for long intervals with the gas jugs & trips to town filling the jugs. It is great being able to remove the flexible reduced spout and pour straight out of the gas jug. We still use our JD LT-160 mower around the equipment & hay bales. With the Z920M, I no longer have to hook up the 72” finish mower to our JD 4300 tractor, which usually has the loader attached and has to be removed, when the LT-160 was taking too long or too hot outside. I’m planning on years of service from our Z920M, just like our other “green” equipment.

975 hours on Z920M now
My mower now has 975 hours on it. Z920M with 3X bagger and 240# counter-balance weights. Very Heavy mower. Back wheels dig out clumps of grass on tight turns in my sandy soil. Bagger makes the Z920 SOO LONG that it really restricts your access. I'm constantly banging the bagger against trees. Great mower with bagger/blower removed. Fuel filler is TOO SMALL. Filling from a 5 gal can blows fuel all over. Poor rain protection for the engine. Engine Air intake was designed poorly. Water gets into the intake system and hydro-locks the motor. This happens EVERY time that I leave the mower outside in Florida's heavy rain. I'm tired of having to pull spark plugs and clear the engine every time it rains. This whole intake assembly needs to be tested in heavy rain and redesigned. I made up a small tarp/cover for the top of the engine, but really JD, since when can your equipment not be left outside???

Great power and speed
I had a 737 then the 920M both with 54” decks. The 920 seems to have more power and a better ride. No push rod issues. The flashing light trouble codes make the machine less user serviceable. The fuel fill is too small for fueling using 5 gallon cans and a funnel. If you fill too fast it blows gas everywhere.

Nice mower!
First, I have been buying John Deere mowers for over 20 years. I recently caught new lawn mower fever so I traded in a 2013 model Z915b with 54” deck an 350 hrs for a new Z920m 54”deck with the suspension seat upgrade. Nothing wrong with the trade in mower. I am a residential mower; not commercial. Mower was on sale so I traded in. I LOVE my new Z920m! Mowed with it twice so far. Excellent cut, power an comfort with the Z920m. Only has about 3hrs still has the break in oil but I can tell this mower will last me 20yrs. Front caster wheels started squeaking but really not an issue. I ordered the built in jack so I can lift it to work/clean underneath the deck. Removing the front wheels and applying grease not an issue. The jack works perfectly. Was able to lift the front an remove the front wheels an apply grease to the axle bolts. Cured the squeaks. Been running it at different engine throttle speed to make sure everything will be okay with the Kawasaki engine. YuP, this Texan recommends this mower!

BEST ZERO TURN I'VE EVER OWNED!!
WOW. That's my first thoughts on this mower. What in incredible machine. I have used essentially every other brand, as I've been mowing for years, but always stayed away from John Deere's because of over priced reputation.....but now I get it. You get what you pay for. And this is the best. I'll never NOT use John Deere products again. I LOVE my Z920M.

Z920M 60" Kaw
Have had this machine now for a year.. And I am impressed every time I use it. This machine does not care what it goes thru, it'll cut it and with ease.. I bought the 60" and I was worried with the motor it would be doggie... that is not the case. This thing is a machine. Was mowing 2ft brome grass today. And no problem... what a awesome machine.

Great mower...
I have over 12 acres to cut, and this mower did a great job. I'm not just cutting grass, but all kinds of small stuff that pops up in a recovering pasture. I also have a Bermuda grass front lawn. The fields are cut at the maximum height and the Bermuda lawn at 1-1/2". After mowing the place looked like a golf course. It handled everything easily. I strongly recommend getting the most comfortable seat unless you are only cutting athletic fields. My fields are rough and it is a rough but manageable ride. Without the suspension seat I'd have had to mow at a crawl. I got the Thweels and they cushion the ride somewhat, as well. I added the lights kit, and a canopy to stay out of the hot southern sun. The large gas tank makes it easy to stay out for many hours at a time. You need a canopy. I am really impressed with this equipment. If you go to look at one, pick up the floor/foot plate-- that will give you an idea of the strength of the 7-Iron deck. I don't own other farm equipment, but I was impressed and I'm glad I bought it. In windy conditions, dry grass/weeds discharging from the chute into the wind tended to fly up and clog the cooling screens for the motor and drive units. Check them occasionally. I'm not sure that's really correctable short of bagging.

Poppa's new toy!
My first Zero Turn, 920M. Took a little getting used to with the hand movements (steering) but caught on quick. I suggest if a newbie, get out and drive, play, learn and maneuver as you would mowing and get acquainted with the machine. I've read comments and my take is this: Rough ride, it's a mower, not a Mercedes. Get the high dollar seat! . . . Roll Bar: I spent 30 yrs in fire/rescue, it happens! Keep it up! . . . Speed: Be nice to cut at 10mph all the time but think safety first. . . . Safety switch in the seat: YES! Shuts mower down if you come off. . . . Step on the deck: Excellent idea. . .. Non scalp rollers: Why not? . . . Front tires: Flat free . . . Anyway, easy to set blade height, controls at your finger tips, comfort seating, easy operation, can even operate one handed, I can go on and on. Have nothing negative, but it is a new experience for me and has already cut my time in half and I'm just learning the ropes. Fun to drive, easy on my back and shoulders, steers at a flick of the wrist. Solid machine, lives up to the hype and all I've been told.

Wow
I mow about 10 acres every week and was spending all of one day each weekend on the mower (about 10 hours). I started looking at zero turn mowers as an alternative to more traditional "tractor" type mowers. Looked at Cub, Toro, Snapper, Hustler and other brands. My first John Deere mower lasted 19 years so with that in mind I visited the local Deere dealership. Let me sum this up quickly. I test drove the mower ZTrak920M - 60" cut, got a great price and it now takes me about half the time to mow. The sales associate told me it would cut my mow time in half, while hard to believe at the time, it was true. Maintenance is a breeze with the oil drain tube and removable foot rest for access to the deck. All grease points are easy to access, as well. The machine is very well built - sturdy and can mow @ 12mph - I don't, but it can. Easy to learn to drive and carries enough fuel so that I don't have to stop and refill while mowing the entire 10 acres. I highly recommend this machine!

Awesome Machine
Just traded my 2014 48" 920M for a 2015 920M both 7IronPro decks. The new seat absorbers are a nice addition, this thing helps a lot with cut times being a solo operator. SneadAG is the best, 7Irons are best decks all around.
