The engine uses latest technologies to optimize fuel economy, improve control and accuracy, and reduces environmental impact. The common rail system (CRS) optimizes fuel economy and reduces operating costs compared to engines not using CRS technology. High pressure injection atomizes fuel into finer particles which burn more completely. It results in improved fuel economy and lower cost of operation.
The electronic control unit (ECU) provides optimum fuel control and accuracy. ECU monitors and controls the engine. It continuously monitors engine conditions and adjusts the fuel delivery accordingly to ensure optimum performance and emissions.
The new engine comes with an after treatment system. The system operates automatically. The exhaust filter consists of a diesel particulate filter (DPF) which captures particulate matter (PM) contained in the exhaust gas. Using a natural cleaning process, most of the PM trapped in the exhaust filter is eliminated by the heat of the exhaust stream generated by normal use. In situations of low temperature, engine speed or load factor, an active cleaning cycle is initiated. In this cleaning cycle, the exhaust gas temperature is raised by injecting additional fuel during the exhaust stroke of normal vehicle operation to the diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC).
After many hours of use, the exhaust filter may require an ash removal service.
DPF cleaning
Depending on the load that the tractor is under, as well as ambient temperature, humidity, and engine speed, the DPF may build up with particulate matter, thus requiring cleaning. Filter cleaning is determined by one of three conditions:
- A prescribed time-based estimation of needed filter cleaning
- DOC/DPF pressure sensors
- A particulate matter buildup estimation based on load conditions
Once one of the three conditions has been met, filter cleaning will occur.
There are three different types of filter cleaning processes:
- Passive filter cleaning
- Active filter cleaning
- Parked filter cleaning
Passive filter cleaning
Passive filter cleaning occurs naturally when the engine is generating enough heat to oxidize particulate matter. This automatic process occurs continuously during normal operating conditions. No tractor icons or symbols appear on the display during passive filter cleaning.
NOTE: Passive filter cleaning requires no operator involvement, and there is no interruption to tractor operation.
Active filter cleaning
If conditions (temperature, load, or speed) for passive filter cleaning cannot be achieved, then PM is removed using active filter cleaner.
To achieve the required conditions, exhaust temperature management (ETM) manages the initiation and duration of active filter cleaning. ETM can adjust numerous engine parameters and/or inject a small quantity of fuel into the exhaust stream for a short duration. The fuel turns to vapor and chemically reacts with the catalysts in the DOC to create heat to oxidize PM.
It is important to note that at no time is the fuel in the DOC/DPF ignited, and there is no flame within the DOC/DPF.
Like passive filter cleaning, active filter cleaning requires no operator involvement, and there is no interruption to tractor operation.
Parked filter cleaning
In some instances where passive and active filter cleaning have not fully cleaned the PM from the system, a parked filter cleaning may need to take place. Most likely, the only time a parked filter cleaning will need to occur is when automatic filter cleaning has been disabled for an extended period of time and multiple warnings to engage filter cleaning were ignored or if the tractor has been used during light load conditions. Additionally, when the automatic filter cleaning process has been deliberately interrupted multiple times, or if active filter cleaning has failed numerous times due to a failed component, a parked filter cleaning may be requested. In these rare instances the operator will have to park the tractor and start the filter cleaning process.
The parked filter cleaning process needs to be activated based on usage and operation of the tractor. The process will take approximately 30 minutes. See operator’s manual for more details.
This system constantly monitors the soot level of the tractor, making sure the tractor is always in peak performance condition. This ensures high performance at all times.
NOTE: Number of hours since last regeneration and soot level percentage viewable on LCD display.
NOTE: When the tractor is in a filter cleaning process at low speed or while parked and running, the exhaust will be routed through the vertical exhaust outlet. In all other cases, the exhaust will be routed through the downward exhaust outlet. This ensures minimal heat impact to operator.Key features of the engine are:
- Economical cast-in-block cylinder design for good cooling and long life
- Direct fuel injection
- Improves starting
- Injects fuel directly on top of pistons for more efficient combustion
- Develops more horsepower per gallon of fuel than indirect injection engines
- Aluminum alloy pistons with built-in steel struts are lightweight to reduce connecting rod-bearing loads and provide good heat transfer characteristics

PowrReverser™ transmission allows for clutchless direction changes
The PowrReverser transmission, available on 3033R and 3039R Tractors, offers a hydraulically shifted forward-to-reverse transmission. This allows for clutchless shuttle shifting between forward and reverse with one lever for quick and easy direction change.
- The PowrReverser transmission does not require the operator to use the clutch to shift between forward and reverse.
The 12x12 PowrReverser transmission's hydraulically actuated wet clutch takes the place of the dry-type traction clutch. Two multi-disk clutch packs (one forward and one reverse) are hydraulically actuated when the directional (reverser) lever is placed in either the forward or reverse position.
Each clutch pack consists of three large, 13-cm (5-in.) diameter clutch disks that are oil-cooled, allowing excellent heat dissipation and extended clutch life.
- Clutch A is used for the forward operation of the tractor
- Clutch B is used for the reverse operation of the tractor
Key features of the PowrReverser transmission are:
-
12 forward and 12 reverse speeds
- Reverser lever, located on the left side on the instrument console, allows operator to make direction changes without clutching
- Fast shuttle shift for improved loader operation
- Dual-cone synchronizers allow for synchronized shifts between gears for on-the-go shifting with use of the clutch
- Helical-cut gears for quiet operation
- Well-spaced speeds for turf, loader, and transport work
- Neutral-start switch prevents tractor from starting when transmission (main range) is not in neutral
- Dual wet-disk clutches provide long clutch life
- Shifts between ranges are not synchronized
NOTE: 3R Tractors with PowrReverser are not compatible with mid PTO. They are not compatible from the factory or field installed.

Maximize productivity with an eHydro™ transmission
The 3R Series Tractor is available with an exclusive three-range electronic hydrostatic (eHydro) transmission.
- Fluid under pressure transmits engine power to the drive wheels through a pump and motor
- Provides high torque for start-up
- Reduces powertrain shock loads
Sauer-Danfoss® supplies both the pump and motor. This ensures that the components are matched to each other, providing maximum efficiency.
The electronic hydrostatic transmission is ideally suited for jobs where productivity is a must, such as loader or mower applications.
Twin Touch™ foot controls allow selecting both direction of travel and speed with a touch of the toe.
Key features of the eHydro transmission are:- Infinite ground speeds, even at full throttle, allow the operator to match the speed of the tractor to the job
- No clutching for fast and easy direction changes
- Twin Touch foot pedals for quick and easy forward/reverse operation
- Cruise control is base equipment
- Cruise-control switch is located on the right-hand console for easy access
- Cruise control is electronically engaged and disengaged and allows for more precise setting of speed
Sauer-Danfoss eHydro transmission is used for reliable operation. Durability features include:
1) Large forged trunnion shaft with larger support bearings to reduce vibration and noise.
2) Center section made from durable cast aluminum, which is 10 percent stronger.
3) Transmission oil cooler cools transmission oil for longer transmission life.
Safety features of the eHydro transmission include:- The tractor starts with one or both foot pedals depressed, but it does not move until both pedals first come to neutral.
- The tractor comes to a stop if the operator leaves the seat, but the engine does not shut off unless the power take-off (PTO) is also running.
Key John Deere advantage
John Deere's Twin Touch foot controls offer several key advantages over competitive hydrostatic transmission (HST) tractor models.
Key advantages over competitive HST tractor models:
- Some competitive hydrostatic tractors use a treadle pedal (toe-heel) design foot control for operation
- Requires the operator to use both toe and heel to change direction, resulting in increased operator fatigue.
Integrated eHydro features
The eHydro convenience controls have been integrated into a single module. Combining features such as SpeedMatch™ cruise control, LoadMatch™ switch, MotionMatch, eThrottle, and automotive style cruise control pulls the maximum efficiency out of the eHydro transmission tractors. All these features are standard on the 3R models and deliver an easier and more comfortable user experience.eThrottle
The 3R Series Tractors come equipped with the eThrottle function. This feature is designed make the tractor quieter and use less fuel. With the simple push of a button, the engine speed is linked to the pedal position. The operator can keep the throttle essentially all the way in the low position. The engine rpms, as well as the tractor speed, increase together with the pedal position. This provides the operator with comfort and convenience as well as fuel economy.
Automotive-style cruise control
An automotive-style cruise control is standard equipment on the 3R Series Tractors. Cruise control is electronically engaged and disengaged and is located on the right-hand operator console.
- Maintains desired forward speed without pressure on the foot pedal
- When activated, operator can set cruise speed
- Use the SET/- button to set cruise speed, or to decrease cruise/max speed
- Use the RES/+ button to set cruise speed, or to increase cruise/max speed
- A speed sensor also allows the tractor to maintain preset speed driving up and down hills
- To disengage the cruise control, either:
- Apply pressure to the brakes
- Disengage cruise control button
- Briefly depress the reverse travel pedal
LoadMatch power management system
LoadMatch is an industry exclusive and a standard feature on the 3R Series Tractors.
If torque requirements increase significantly, the transmission will reduce the tractor's drive speed to compensate for the increased load on the transmission, maximizing torque to drive wheels and minimize stalls.
Controls automatically adjust LoadMatch compensation depending on the tractor’s application. PTO applications require less engine speed fluctuation, therefore adjusts the amount of droop depending on PTO speed. This adjustment increases efficiency and optimizes engine speed and torque output based on tractor application.
While typically left on, LoadMatch can be turned off with the right-hand console controls.
MotionMatch
MotionMatch, standard on the 3R Series Tractors, is located on the right-hand console. It offers seven settings for adjusting the rollout or decelerate when the pedal is released.Longer accelerate and decelerate distances.
Shorter accelerate and decelerate distances.
SpeedMatch
SpeedMatch, standard on the 3R Series Tractors, further enhances the eHydro cruise control functions by allowing the operator to preset maximum speed. Once this feature is engaged, the operator must stroke the travel pedal fully to meet the operator preset speed. This function improves accuracy and safety, particularly at lower travel speed applications.
Rotary tilling or spraying applications are examples of where SpeedMatch can be applied. SpeedMatch will work in both the forward and reverse set speeds.
NOTE: Automotive-style cruise control and SpeedMatch can be used in conjunction with LoadMatch to maximize productivity.

3039
Bought a 3039r. Love the John Deere quality. The 3039 is very tippy on hills or level ground with a load in the front bucket. I had the rear wheels spread 4” on each side with wheel spacers and installed 90 lbs of wheel weights installed. Much much better. If I had it to do over I would definitely gotten a 4 series which have a wider wheel base. Otherwise I love the tractor.

this tractor is easy to use and does what ever Is exspected to
I had a Yanmar 3110D for 15 years and I never had issues with the motor . I purchased the JD cause they have the Yanmar motor. So far I am very pleased with the power and the tractor very easy to operate,my wife drives it and my daughter and Daughter in law also operate it.

Ergonomics are horrible
Loader joystick has tons of slop. No armrests, seat is too high for a shorter person to reach the forward/reverse pedals. Lots of power though.

big dissapointment
I had a beautiful 13ac yard. In western Pa lots of hills. This tractor slips out of gear on a regular basis almost running away with me on it going down some of my hills. Called dealer told me adjust motion match. Now it doesn't run away, it just leaves 10 to 15ft skid marks in my yard. The mower does cut nice. Taking deck on and off is a challenge, not like the TV commercial. A hard flat surface? Will not disengage in the garage since the floor is slopped to the drains. Have a 3 car garage with 3 pads of concrete in front of each door. Mower will only release in the middle pad and in a certain spot. I guess a hard flat surface must need to be laser flat. Too much back wheel spinning going up hill even on dry days. Lots of spin marks. Have to plant grass seed almost after every mowing. Afraid to go down my hills. I think this tractor is trying to kill me

John Deere 3033R 165 Loader with enclosed cab
I have owned a 4200 series, 3033R and now looking to get a 3039R. Anyone looking to buy a tractor these models are perfect. Plenty of power and the enclosed cab in absolutely incredible. These are so much better than Kubotas, Kioti's and Mahindras....You dont pay more the ":green paint", you pay more for the quality, service and reputation that Deere has developed. I have shopped them all...if you want something cheaper, go ahead, you'll see ! This is an investment and John Deere is unmatched, doesnt mean something wont break or fail. It will, but call Deere and they will certainly take care of it....especially after I have purchased 3 tractors and a 930M mower. I cant wait to get my 3039R with a back hoe, snowblower and loader ! A private 10 acre home owner who just wants to be spoiled !

first tractor...very easy to use
Only ~25 hours so far...but very valuable piece of my property equipment. The 3039R is very to use with good features for many different property project uses. Loader is a breeze to operate with bucket or fork lift blades. The power level of the loader is perfect for my 100+ acre recreational wooded property....Lifts/moves felled 30 foot eastern cedars trees with ease. Loader attachment and detachment are quite simple and trouble free (with level ground)...without leaving drivers seat...very cool. Rear 3 Point hitch attachment upgrade also a great feature...brush mower, box blade are simple to attach right from drivers seat as well! ONLY ISSUE - hence the 4 star Ease of Use rating Now the PTO connection on the mower however is a real bear to connect...hard to maneuver and connect in the really tight space, and the mover PTO coupling sleeve compression is very hard to hold while trying to slide the shaft onto 3039R PTO gear. Perhaps it will be easier over time...but it is really tight and very difficult - still after several months of use. All in all a good piece of equipment!

Easy - quick work of any job.
I've owned my 3039R since June 2016 - review being written 11/2016. Over all I love this tractor, The power is fantastic I haven't found anything I haven't been able to lift or pull with this tractor. Don't let the smaller size scare you, it has a lot of power in this machine. Ive been getting excellent fuel economy when compared to my other 1025R. I did have one hiccup with this tractor after 12 hours I had the alternator belt break due to over tight from factory. Dealer was on it immediately and I had it back two days later so I cant really down it for that. I have nothing but good to say about this tractor.

3039R cab tractor
Bought less than 2 years ago and currently has 200 hours on it. This tractor has had problems from day it was delivered. Dealer service mixed. Currently on the way back to the dealer. See Cons below.

Great all around tractor!
This tractor is perfect for my small ranch! It's strong enough to pick up round rolls of hay with the 3pt hitch! The tractor is very quiet and very easy to use.

Love my tractor!
I bought this tractor brand new in 2015. I also have a JD855, and now a JD1550. The 3039 is my favorite for my big jobs, especially with orchard spraying. This machine has saved my farm from the plight of Coffee Leaf Rust! Believe the phrase "Let the machines do the work". I have no man around to do the farm work, well except my three Mr. Deeres! Love them all!!!

Very capable and easy to use
I bought this 3039 for a timber property with over 2 miles of hilly gravel lanes, clearings, food plots and plenty of trees and mowing. I often use a pallet fork, loader bucket, grader blade, box blade and a wagon. Very impressed after the first 50 hours of trouble free use. Easy to start, drive, and change implements. Also surprisingly easy on fuel. Plastic hood ornament broke off the first time it got hit by a wayward branch and the hood release button is a pain. Other that that I love it.

Great tractor
I upgraded from a 3038e to a 3039r w cab .The difference between the two is night and day. The 3038e was under powered for my uses but the 3039r has plenty of power for more than I expect it to do. I am more than happy with my purchase of this tractor. I will put a lot of hours on this rig for quite awhile.

Keep looking if your searching for Tractors in this class
I had a JD 2305 for years and then had a bad idea of "upgrading" I purchased this one, and it has been nothing but a disappointment. Changing from low, to med to high is clunky and temperamental. There is a defective valve or something, when you try and raise a load with the loader, it goes DOWN before it goes up. Dealer confirmed that it is in fact defective, but then they ordered the wrong part and now my tractor is unusable. Changing the rear attachment from Backhoe to Box blade is a pain.

Great unit for acreage owners
I spent time testing out a number of different tractors from various manufacturers and finally decided to buy the 3039R. The main reasons for my selection were the fit and finish of the product, ergos of the operator station ( cabbed in my case), the mid-mount pto, autoconnect mid-mount mower deck, dual pedal hydraulics for forward and backward movement, and last but not least the number of dealer locations nearby to service or repair my unit when it needs it. I've had my unit since mid 2014 and have used it for mowing, garden tilling, food plot prep and planting, logging/firewood, light dirt work, and snow removal. It has done a good job for all of those needs so far, some better than others, but all successfully. I've had a couple of minor issues that required service work, but all were minor adjustments that you need to do with most new machines. I would recommend it to others and would buy it again. My only complaint is the price of the unit. I wish it was a bit closer in price to other manufacturer's comparable units.

This thing is cool
Just got it. It runs super quiet. Drives better than my truck, and no diesel smell. The new operator controls are brilliant, even the handbook is easy to read. This is going to be a great machine for new buyers.

A big little tractor
I purchased my 3039R (open station) with H165 loader in the spring of 17, I now have 100hrs on it. I have used it on our 20acre property for dirt work, mowing, driveway repair, brush cutting, food plots, snow removal and general utility. I grew up on a farm with larger equipment and have been employed using dirt work equipment. This tractor has been the perfect fit for me. Keeping in mind that this is a small, narrow, lightweight tractor- it will move far more dirt and gravel than I expected when I balance it properly. I made a weight bracket for the 3pt that carries 6 70lb JD weights. This is not a skid-loader, but it will push almost as much even with a 73in bucket! I leave the loader on but remove the bucket for mowing both with a 6ft brush cutter and 72in grooming mower. It is quiet to run and I never run out of power. For snow removal I added a skid-loader adapter to attach a 7ft snow blade to the loader which is able to angle using the rear hydraulics- controlled at the loader controls (talk about perfect). Food plots are easy to prepare using the iMatch quick hitch to switch implements without leaving the seat. All in all I have found that I can lift, carry, push as much as I want. I can't say the same for pulling, but could be remedied with finding a better way to balance the tractor. I looked at all current and past models and brands before I made my purchase and I am very pleased with this tractor. MotionMatch keeps the machine RPM low during all functions (when PTO isn't used) and keeps fuel usage to around 5gal/week during the summer, and 5gal/month during spring fall and winter. All the controls are perfectly placed and coded, I am never looking or reaching to find a control. I recommend this tractor to anyone with similar needs.

Great replacement for my 1953 Ferguson 30.
I got my 3039R in October. I got a H165 loader, and a RC072 Bush-hog. So far I've been happy. The wife made me get one with a cab and it's a good thing. I have to air the seat up to its max to be able to use the foot pedals because I'm a really big guy, but I can live with that. It replaced a Ferguson 30 that had no loaderand all my old implements work with it. Only thing I would have done differently is get wheel weights. I have a slope on the back of my property that's a 1.5:1 slope and it gets a little unstable if you're not careful. I alleviate this by leaving the brush-hog attached even when I don't need it. That helps balance it. It works great also for smoothing the driveway. I have a 10,000 sf gravel driveway and the loader does awesome for helping smooth the ruts out. If you want a good compact tractor these are good tractors. The only cons are that they are expensive and they're not as simple if you are a fix-it-yourself person. My Ferguson was simple 1950's tech and the electoral system was easy to work on.

Best JD I have owned
I have several JD Utility tractors over the past 25 years. Most recently I had a 3038E which I traded in on this 3039R with DLX cab, 165 loader, 64 rear snowblower, back hoe, box blade, I-Match system, and rear weight box. I live in Wyoming and this heated and AC unit is the best. We have high winds and live in the mountains where we can get 30" of snow overnight. WOW the cab is the best ever, 40-60 mph wind, snow, and 0 degrees and I am comfortable in my heated cab. End up doing my long driveway and our road to get to the state road to get out. Loader is easy to use and all of the attachments load and unload with ease. Started out with the old 770, what a difference. Controls are easy to use and handy.
