Start With a Field Walk and Harvest Plan
Before harvest begins, walk fields or blocks and inspect crop maturity, fruit development, canopy density, irrigation coverage, weed and pest pressure, field entrances, ruts, and soft spots.
Berry maturity can vary because of differences in soil, slope, irrigation, sun exposure, and plant health. Identifying those variations early can help establish an efficient picking order and prevent fruit from being harvested before it is ready.
Think through the resources each harvest day will require:
- Labor schedules and crew safety supplies
- Bins, buckets, totes, pallets, trailers, and trucks
- Cold storage and packing capacity
- Fuel, fluids, grease, filters, and replacement parts
- Irrigation fittings and repair supplies
- Drinking water, shade, gloves, and first-aid materials
- Utility vehicles, tractors, loaders, and transport equipment
Make sure harvesting, transportation, cooling, packing, and storage plans are aligned. Fruit quality declines quickly when berries sit in the heat waiting for transportation.
Protect Fruit Quality Before the First Pick
Berry quality is influenced by conditions well before harvest day. Heat, water stress, crowded canopies, pest pressure, and rough handling can affect firmness, flavor, shelf life, and packout.
Check the canopy and remove dead, damaged, or non-fruiting growth where appropriate. Major pruning should still happen during the recommended seasonal window for each crop, but light cleanup before harvest can improve airflow, visibility, and access for crews.
Inspect trellises, posts, wires, netting, and plant supports. Repair loose wires, leaning posts, and damaged structures before crews begin moving through the rows.
Clear excessive vegetation from rows, field edges, and access points so crew and equipment can move safely. Controlling weeds can also reduce competition for moisture during hot weather.
Inspect Irrigation Before Temperatures Rise
Consistent moisture is critical as berries size and ripen. Many berry crops have shallow root systems, making them vulnerable to heat and water stress during summer conditions in Washington and Idaho.
Inspect drip lines, emitters, filters, valves, pumps, and system pressure. Watch for clogged emitters, leaks, dry field edges, uneven distribution, and pressure drops. Walk the entire irrigation block rather than checking only near the pump or main line. Confirm that water is reaching row ends and areas with different elevations or soil conditions.
Keep common repair parts nearby, including fittings, clamps, emitters, filters, valves, and replacement tubing. A small irrigation failure can quickly affect fruit quality when temperatures are high.
Mulch can help conserve moisture, moderate soil temperature, and suppress weeds. Check mulch depth and refresh thin areas before the hottest part of the season.
Plan Harvesting Around Heat

Move harvested fruit out of the field quickly. Avoid leaving full totes or flats in direct sunlight, and use shaded staging areas when immediate transportation is not possible.
Train crews on proper handling before the first major harvest day. Overfilled containers, dropped flats, excessive stacking, and repeated transfers can bruise fruit and reduce packout. Crew planning should also address heat safety. Make drinking water, shade, rest periods, and emergency supplies readily available. Supervisors should understand the signs of heat-related illness and know how to respond.
Complete a Pre-Harvest Equipment Inspection
Even when berries are picked by hand, equipment is needed to move crews, supplies, fruit, and materials. A breakdown during harvest slows the entire operation and exposes fruit to heat.
Inspect tractors, utility vehicles, trailers, loaders, forklifts, sprayers, mowers, and transportation equipment before harvest begins.
- Inspect hydraulic hoses, belts, chains, bearings, shields, and guards
- Check tires, inflation, brakes, and wheel hardware
- Replace worn filters, fluids, and service items
- Test lights, displays, alarms, and safety equipment
- Inspect trailer floors, gates, hitches, and tie-down points
- Confirm cooling, packing, and material-handling equipment is operational
- Schedule preventive maintenance before harvest volume increases
Stock Up Before Harvest Begins
A missing filter, broken fitting, damaged tire, or unavailable tote can interrupt a productive harvest day. Build a supply list early and place frequently used items where crews and operators can reach them quickly.
Prioritize irrigation fittings, filters, lubricants, hydraulic fluid, belts, hoses, hand tools, gloves, drinking water, shade supplies, first-aid items, picking containers, pallets, and wear parts. Review inventory throughout the season, especially when multiple fields or berry varieties may reach maturity at the same time.
