Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) is used in a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system to remove nitrogen oxides (NOx) from engine exhaust. DEF is 32.5 percent high purity urea and 67.5 percent deionized water. For farmers, hobby farmers, agricultural workers, and landscapers, diesel exhaust fluid is a lifeline for getting their equipment to run properly.
While most tractors need diesel exhaust fluid to run, DEF can deteriorate quickly without proper maintenance, causing harm to your farming equipment, weakened performance, and even complete equipment failure.
Are you looking to optimize the performance and longevity of your tractors and farming equipment? In this edition of the Papé Machinery Agriculture & Turf blog, we’re taking a look at 5 ways to maintain and care for diesel exhaust fluid.
#1 Pay Attention to Shelf Life
Diesel exhaust fluid doesn’t include any preservatives, so it actually does have a shelf life. Track the expiration date, as diesel exhaust fluid generally has a shelf life of 6 to 12 months. When you purchase diesel exhaust fluid, be sure that the expiration date is clearly marked; if you are storing DEF in an ISO-approved container, clearly date and label the container with the expiration date.
If you are purchasing DEF, be sure to only use high-quality DEF. The best way to ensure you are getting high-quality DEF is to purchase it through your John Deere dealer, like Papé Machinery Agriculture & Turf.
#2 Use Proper Storage Containers
Diesel exhaust fluid is corrosive to aluminum, so be sure to store DEF in ISO-approved containers. Materials like stainless steel, high-density polyethylene, and polypropylene are good storage container options.
#3 Store in Cool, Dry Spaces
High heat and direct sunlight can cause diesel exhaust fluid to degrade more quickly. While diesel exhaust fluid can sustain freezing and thawing, the fluid mixture becomes degraded if exposed to high temperatures exceeding 86 degrees fahrenheit. The ideal conditions for storing DEF are at a cool temperature (70 degrees fahrenheit or lower).
#4 Prevent Contamination
When dispensing diesel exhaust fluid, you also want to be sure and take steps to avoid contamination. The fluid should be dispensed directly into a machine via a nozzle. Use of funnels is discouraged, as they can be dirty and lead to contamination.
Contrary to the name, never put DEF in a diesel fuel tank. The DEF filling port is identified by a blue colored cap embossed with the DEF symbol.
#5 Perform Regular Testing & Maintenance
Regular fluid testing is crucial to identify any potential issues with diesel fluid quality. This involves checking for contaminants, water content, and degradation. Regular testing allows you to catch problems early on and take appropriate action before they cause severe damage to your equipment.
In addition to regular testing, regular maintenance of your tractors and farming equipment is vital for optimal performance.
