Winter is upon us, but that doesn’t mean we can rest on our laurels. While work may slow somewhat, many of us are still working out in the field and tending to our land. You may have livestock to feed, or snow to plow; or, you may be simply storing your tractor away for the season.
Whatever the task, the colder temperatures can wreak havoc on our equipment, so we need to proceed with caution. What are ways to ensure that your tractor can withstand the wintry weather ahead? Regular winterization and maintenance ensures that your tractor keeps its longevity! In this month’s edition of the Papé Machinery Agriculture & Turf blog, let’s take a look at 5 ways to winterize your tractor!
#1 Do a Deep Clean
Make sure to clean the debris out of the radiator, especially if you’re planning to store your tractor over the winter. This way, you won’t be in a situation where all the old debris results in mold or rust buildup while it’s storing or getting less usage. Even if you are using your tractor in the winter months, a deep clean of your tractor will maximize your uptime and ensure your tractor is running smoothly. Give the whole tractor a good wash to prevent buildup.
#2 Check Your Coolant and Antifreeze
Make sure that your tractor can survive the colder temperatures. Check the coolant or antifreeze levels to make sure your equipment is protected from freezing. You may also want to use a coolant heater in your engine compartment to prevent freezing.
#3 Fuel Treatment
Use a winter-grade fuel to prevent freezing in cold temperatures. You can also use a fuel treatment, such as a conditioner or stabilizer to keep your fuel fresh and protected.
#4 Maintain the Battery
Check the condition of your battery. If you are storing your tractor, remove the batteries, as colder temperatures shorten battery life span.
#5 Start it Up
If you’re not using your tractor often during the winter, you want to make sure to start it up ever so often and keep the engine nice and warm.
